Junior year I had an 8am class three days a week, a part-time job, and a genuine inability to make a dinner decision by 6pm without crying a little inside. Standing at a stove after a full day felt impossible.
Then my roommate showed me what a crockpot actually does. You put the ingredients in before you leave. It cooks all day while you live your life. You come home and dinner is done. Done done. Like someone cooked for you.
Crockpot meal prep is the one habit that gives you back more time than anything else — and you don’t even have to be in the kitchen for most of it. I’m Anne. I’m 27. Here’s the beginner system.
The Time Math That Changed Everything
- 3.5h Old way (stove 5 nights)
- 35m Crockpot way (dump + reheats)
- ~3h Saved every week
- 12h Handed back per month

Tools That Make This Actually Easy
You only need a working slow cooker. Glass containers make leftovers nicer — but the crockpot is the whole habit.

Crock-Pot 6-Quart Slow Cooker
The beginner size — enough for 4–5 servings so your whole week is covered from one cook. Oval shape fits a whole chicken or large batch of soup. Around $30–40 on Amazon and it lasts years.

Glass Meal Prep Containers
Saucy crockpot meals stain plastic and lids start to smell. Glass doesn’t absorb odors or color, reheats evenly, and stacks flat in the fridge.

Why Crockpot Meal Prep Is Different From Every Other Method
Every other meal prep method still asks something of you — standing at the stove, checking the oven, hovering by the microwave. A crockpot asks for about 10 minutes in the morning, then does 6 hours of work unattended. Knowing dinner is already cooking changes how the whole day feels.
“Slow cookers are the ultimate weeknight lifesaver — just add your ingredients, set it, and let the magic happen while you go about your day.”
If you don’t own one yet, start with a 6-quart Crock-Pot — the beginner size that covers a week of meals without crowding the counter.
Can You Use a Crockpot in a Dorm?
Honest answer: it depends on the dorm. Many schools ban open heating elements (toasters, hot plates, sometimes slow cookers). Check your dorm’s specific appliance rules and ask your RA — a lot of dorms allow slow cookers because they’re low-risk (sealed lid, no open flame), and some have a shared kitchen floor.
If you’re allowed one, a mini 2-quart version is dorm-friendly and makes about two servings. If you’re not, use the shared kitchen when you can, or save this system for apartment life.
How Crockpot Meal Prep Actually Works (It’s Almost Too Simple)
- Morning (10 min): protein, vegetables, sauce, splash of broth into the crockpot. Set to low, lid on, leave.
- All day (0 min): live your life — the crockpot doesn’t need you.
- Evening (5 min): open the lid, portion into containers, done.
Don’t fill the crockpot more than two-thirds full (it needs room for steam). Low heat for 6–8 hours is usually better than high for 4 — more tender proteins, more developed flavor.
“Crockpots don’t overcook things the way an oven does. Even if you’re gone a little longer than planned, that chicken tortilla soup on low heat will be fine at 7 hours or 9 hours.”

Storage, Reheating, and What You Can Freeze
| Meal | Fridge | Freeze | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chicken Taco Soup | 5 days | 3 months | Best for double batching. |
| Marry Me Chicken | 4 days | Possible | Cream sauce can separate — stir + splash of broth when reheating. |
| Three-Bean Chili | 5 days | 3 months | Best freezer option on the list. |
| Chicken Bowls + Rice | 4 days (chicken) | — | Store chicken and rice separately (rice gets mushy together). |
| Creamy Chicken and Rice | 4 days | — | Reheat with a splash of broth. |
Reheating tip: add a small splash of broth or water to every crockpot meal when reheating — low-and-slow cooking removes moisture. About 1 tbsp is enough. Microwave 90 seconds, stir, done.
Portion into glass meal prep containers so saucy leftovers don’t stain plastic or smell weird by Thursday.
How Crockpot Meal Prep Fits Into Your Budget

“On r/EatCheapAndHealthy, slow cooker chili and dump soups are consistently the top recommendations for anyone asking ‘what’s the cheapest possible way to eat real food this week?’ Crockpot cooking is the great equalizer — cheap ingredients turn into genuinely good meals because of the low-and-slow process.”
